Simple Equipment Checks You Can Do Yourself

Air Filters: Air filters should be replaced every 15,000 miles. Poor performance or a vehicle stalling are just a few problems that could result from a clogged air filter.

Battery: Visually check your battery for loose connections and for corrosive deposits (greenish white crust) around the terminals every three months. If you have a non-sealed battery, check your water levels at every oil change. Remember if you have a battery that is more than five years old it would be wise to replace it before it leaves you stranded one day.

Belts and Hoses: Belts and hoses should be replaced about every four years, however you should safety inspect them at every oil change: look for looseness and wear.

Exhaust Systems: Do not wait for the roar and thunderous noise that comes from a failed muffler or pipe. Your exhaust should be inspected every three months or three thousand miles. Exhaust leaks can be deadly and you won't always hear a leak when it is starting.

Fuel Filter: Vehicles with fuel injection need to replace the fuel filter around 30,000 miles or every two years. If your engine does not get its fuel in an efficient manner you can imagine how well it will run or not.

Lights: These should all be checked before every road trip or at least once a year. Check headlights, fog lights, brake lights, turn signals, and interior lighting.
